The Art of Too Much
Contemporary Artist Luisa Zay on Choice, Overconsumption, and Visual Storytelling, interview with Selflessart Gallery, New York
"Based in Cologne, Germany, contemporary artist Luisa Zay creates thought-provoking works that challenge how we navigate choice, consumerism, and daily rituals. Her ongoing series, Excessive Consumption, transforms the seemingly mundane setting of the supermarket into a stage where modern life unfolds, overwhelm, desire, and decision-making all competing for attention. Zay’s work isn’t about quick answers; it’s about pausing to notice."

Excessive Consumption Series
What is it about?
Every day, we’re surrounded by things we don’t really need… but somehow, they shape how we live.
I wanted to capture that in my series – how consumption influences our lives, often without us noticing.
Each painting represents a choice, a craving, a habit, addiction or obsession we carry.
Art gives us a moment to stop and think:
what is it that really matters?
